The Apollo Theatre London is located on Shaftesbury Avenue, the home of Theatreland. After opening in 1901, the Apollo has hosted numerous types of theatrical entertainment including light opera Kitty Grey in its opening year and Véronique in 1904.
From the 1920s-40s, the Apollo Theatre showcased plays from the best writers of the time, including A Symphony of Two Flats by Ivor Novello in 1929 and Noel Coward's Private Lives in 1944. These plays often won critical and public acclaim, and established the Apollo Theatre as a credible venue for good theatre.
In the later half of the 20th century, the Apollo continued to play host to brilliant plays featuring celebrated actors such as Zoe Wanamaker, Peter O'Toole and John Mills.
2005 saw the theatre being purchased by the Nimax Theatres chain, but this didn't stop the fantastic array of productions that the Apollo produced, such as The Glass Menagerie in 2007 and Rain Man in 2008. More recently, the Apollo Theatre has been home to highly-acclaimed play Jerusalem, and The Madness of George III.
