ABOUT PLAYWRIGHT ROBERT MYERS' THE LYNCHING OF LEO FRANK: When Mary Phagan, a white child-laborer at a pencil factory in Atlanta, is found murdered there in 1913, Leo Frank becomes the primary suspect. Frank, a Brooklyn-born Jewish engineer who managed the factory, is accused of the crime by the factory's African-American janitor, who also accuses Frank of sexual involvement with female workers. Though Frank was almost certainly innocent, he is convicted and sentenced to death, amid a brewing storm of hatred and mistrust from the community. When the sympathetic Georgia governor grants a reprieve, a gang breaks into the prison, kidnaps and then lynches Frank. Many years after this tragic story has unfolded, Frank's former office boy steps forward to bear witness to what he saw...

Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago Founder and Los Angeles-based Theatre Artist Darryl Maximilian Robinson experienced one of the finest supporting roles of his four-decade-plus stage career when he was cast by gifted Director Jonathan Wilson in the role of The Professor ( a black academician of history ) in the 1998 Pegasus Players of Chicago's world premiere production of playwright Robert Myers' "THE LYNCHING OF LEO FRANK," a dramatic recreation onstage of one of the worst incidents of injustice, religious bigotry and racial hatred in American History. The production was mounted at The O'Rourke Center For The Performing Arts In The Windy City, it earned fine notices, and playwright Myers would go on to win a 1999 Chicago Joseph Jefferson Citation Award for Outstanding New Work. Mr. Robinson was proud to create the role of The Black Professor of History in this production.
