Into the Woods Edit

Stage Musical (1987), Television Musical (1991).
Music and Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim, Book: James Lapine.

The merging of several fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Rapunzel, leads to an exploration of the inner psyche of these characters. The story centers around a baker, whose wife is infertile. A neighboring witch helps get her pregnant in exchange for some objects which the couple have to find. Each fairytale character ventures into the woods to get their wishes, and by the end of the first act, each has their wish granted. The second half of the musical changes into a much darker and somber tale, in which we discover what happens after "happily ever after."
